Control

"If I'm walking across the room and you want to help me because I'm stumbling, your instinct would be to want to put your hand under my armpit and your hand on my back and drag me across the room. It's not what I need. I need you to put your hand out so I can touch it. That's all I need. Then I know where I am in space and I can walk. The minute someone grabs me, now they're controlling the movement and I'm screwed because I can't overwhelm that force. If someone just lets me touch them, then I can walk a mile." - Michael J Fox,  https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM2ddn8em/ Michael is referring to his relationship with people and his Parkinson's condition. However, the experience he describes is almost word-for-word transferable to all relationships between people. The best explanation I've seen about this concept if from Buck Brannaman. He describes very simply and clearly that working with horses is about guidance rather than force. People behave the...

Complex Trauma: Understanding and Treatment - Diane Langberg

Complex Trauma: Understanding and Treatment - Diane Langberg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otxAuHG9hKo Summary of Complex Trauma: Understanding and Treatment - Diane Langberg 00:00:00 - 00:50:00 Dr. Diane Langberg explains the complexity of trauma and how it affects individuals differently than post-traumatic stress disorder. Complex trauma is typically caused by multiple chronic stressors, often involving harm from caregivers, leading to severe human development compromise. Dr. Langberg explores the impact of complex trauma on children, including the physiological effects on the brain and adrenal gland, as well as the lasting psychological impact. Victims may develop dissociation, memory fragmentation, and unhealthy perceptions of their perpetrator. The importance of talking and establishing healthy boundaries, as well as being patient and allowing survivors of trauma to process their experiences at their own pace, is emphasized to facilitate healing. Therapy should focus on revers...

Pain / Fear

Freedom Writers - The showdown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU_BueZZNd8   (short version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkyhf4G0YMs   (extended version) The above clips demonstrate how the effect of pain and fear can affect a person's entire experience of life. This is an extremely important thing to understand because it amplifies itself exponentially to the point of total system collapse, like a stock market crash. The only way to solve the problem this situation creates is to stop trying to win, but not to give up. As the song says... Give in, not Up ("Surrender but don't give yourself away"). Insanity

Insanity is believing everyone else is Insane. It is easy for this condition to exist when a person is born into an insane family environment even though the larger environment outside it may be generally sane. The double irony of this condition is that a person born into insanity becomes part of the problem... but they also have the exact thing necessary to solve it... experience. The challenge of this condition is the struggle against one's own instincts... against one's own identity... against the self. This is a problem because it goes against the natural instinct to survive and defend ourselves against threats... but because the threat is ourselves, it results in guilt, depression and suicidal thinking. In religion, this kind of problem is known as Ancestral Sin  ( the idea that individuals inherit the judgement for the sin of their ancestors ) and has connections to the concept of  Original Sin  ( the idea that humans, through birth, inherit a tainted nature ). Anot...

Male Social Health

= In her year and a half living as Ned, Ms. Vincent put him in a number of stereotypical, hypermasculine situations. He joined a blue-collar bowling league, though he was a terrible bowler. (His teammates were kind and cheered him on; they thought he was gay, Ms. Vincent learned later, because they thought he bowled like a girl.) He spent weeks in a monastery with cloistered monks. He went to strip clubs and dated women, though he was rebuffed more often than not in singles bars. He worked in sales, hustling coupon books and other low-margin products door-to-door with fellow salesmen who, with their cartoon bravado, seemed drawn from the 1983 David Mamet play “Glengarry Glen Ross.” Finally, at an Iron John retreat, a therapeutic masculinity workshop — think drum circles and hero archetypes — modeled on the work of the men’s movement author Robert Bly, Ned began to lose it. Being Ned had worn Ms. Vincent down; she felt alienated and disassociated, and after the retreat she checked herse...
